Does my smart home still work if the internet or cloud fails?

Short answer

It depends on local control. Devices with local control (such as via Matter) often keep working; purely cloud-controlled devices do not. From 11 December 2027 manufacturers must provide security updates for new connected products.

Explanation

Many smart devices send every command via a manufacturer's server. If it disappears, the app stops working. For important functions (lighting, heating, locks) choose devices that can work locally and have an ordinary switch as a fallback.

Rules of thumb

  • Always keep an ordinary wall switch for lighting that works without a network. (practical tip, not a source value)
  • Cyber Resilience Act: main obligations from 11 December 2027. [SW-S59]

Pitfalls

  • A cheap device without a support period can quickly become unsafe or unusable. [SW-S59]
