Pins that die off
Pins that stop growing, turn darker or shrivel are called 'aborts' by growers. Usually they get too little fresh air or the humidity fluctuates. Give more fresh air, keep moisture stable and remove the dead pins.

Dead pins, often no bigger than a pea, stop growing completely and darken or dry out. Mushrooms that are simply smaller do keep growing slowly and do not discolour.
