How often must an oil tank be inspected in Wallonia?
In Wallonia, have an above-ground heating oil tank of 3,000 litres or more checked every 10 years by a certified technician. An underground single-wall tank must be tested more often, depending on its age.
For an above-ground tank this is a visual check of the tank and its pipes. An underground single-wall tank needs a leak test: every 10 years when it is 10 to 20 years old, every 5 years between 21 and 30, and every 3 years when it is older or its year of manufacture is unknown. An underground double-wall tank is tested every 10 years.
- Find the date of the last inspection or when the tank was bought
- Book a certified technician
- Make sure the tank, pipes and filling point are accessible
- Keep the report with the tank’s identity sheet

Find the date of the last inspection or when the tank was bought. Book a certified technician. Make sure the tank, pipes and filling point are accessible. Keep the report with the tank’s identity sheet.
Is it a legal requirement?
Wallonia (Belgium): for heating oil tanks of 3,000 to 25,000 litres, the Walloon Government decree of 17 July 2003 requires a check by a certified technician: every 10 years for above-ground tanks and underground double-wall tanks, and every 10, 5 or 3 years for underground single-wall tanks, depending on their age.

These rules apply in Wallonia to tanks of 3,000 litres or more. The rules for smaller tanks were not checked here; Flanders and Brussels have their own intervals.
