How often should you clean out nest boxes?
Clean out nest boxes once a year, in autumn from September onwards, when the breeding season is really over.
Old nests can contain parasites such as fleas and mites. The RSPB recommends emptying nest boxes in autumn, from September, because some species nest right through September. Leave the box alone while birds are still using it.
- First check that the box is really empty
- Wear gloves and remove the old nest
- Rinse the box with boiling water, without chemicals
- Let it dry and put it back up
