How often should you clean your washing machine?
Run your washing machine empty once a month at 60 °C or more, ideally 90 °C.
If you mostly wash at low temperatures, grease, detergent residue and bacteria build up. That causes smells and mould. HG says monthly, or at least every 3 months; monthly is the safer choice if you often wash cold.
- Make sure the drum is empty
- Choose a programme of at least 60°C, preferably 90°C
- Optionally add a washing machine cleaner
- Leave the door and detergent drawer open afterwards to air
