How often should a farrier see your horse?

Have a shod horse seen by the farrier every 6 weeks, often already after 4 weeks. A barefoot horse can sometimes go longer.

Hooves grow constantly and a shoe does not wear down with them. The British Horse Society names four to six weeks as the usual interval for shod horses. Waiting too long leads to unbalanced hooves and strains tendons and joints.

  1. Book the next appointment right after the last one
  2. Keep the horse dry and clean before the visit
  3. Discuss wear, cracks or lameness with the farrier
  4. Note the date of each visit
