How often should you pick out your horse’s hooves?

Pick out your horse’s hooves at least once a day, and before and after riding.

Picking out removes stones and dirt, and you spot problems such as thrush or a loose shoe early. The British Horse Society recommends doing it at least daily. It only takes a few minutes.

  1. Lift the hoof and support it well
  2. Pick from heel to toe, along the frog
  3. Check for smell, black patches, stones and the shoe
  4. Report anything unusual to your farrier or vet
