Growing pink oyster mushrooms

Pink oyster mushroom (Pleurotus djamor) is a tropical oyster mushroom that needs warmth. Do not start below 18 °C and never store the kit in the fridge. At the right warmth the first harvest follows after about 7 to 14 days.

That makes pink oyster a logical choice for a warm room or a cellar of 20 °C or more, where cooler species struggle.

Which temperature?

Mushroom Mania gives a minimum of 18 °C and ideally 20–25 °C. Field & Forest gives 20–26.7 °C. The lower limit therefore differs between 18 and 20 °C; if in doubt, keep to the higher one.

Do not chill

The supplier literally writes 'not in the fridge'. You should not chill spawn of this species either. To start fruiting you cut the bag open and spray it.

First harvest and number of flushes

The first harvest follows after about 7 to 14 days. Harvest as with other oyster mushrooms: before the cap edges curl up. The supplier mentions up to 3 flushes.

What we do not know

The product pages we read give no yield per kit. The colonisation values for home-made substrate are general oyster mushroom values from UF/IFAS, not measured separately for this species.

Growing and eating safely

An allergic lung reaction to spores has been described in professional oyster mushroom growers. No risk measure is known for a single hobby kit: harvest on time, do not grow in a bedroom and ventilate. Always eat the harvest cooked.

Checked on:

This is general growing information from the sources listed. Always follow the instructions of your kit or supplier. Only eat what demonstrably grows from your own culture of the bought, named species; if in doubt about colour, smell or shape, do not eat it.

This is not medical advice. If you repeatedly get a fever, a cough or shortness of breath while growing indoors, remove the culture and see your doctor.
