How often should you change your aquarium water?

Change part of the water in your aquarium every 2 weeks, about 30 percent.

Without regular water changes, waste products such as nitrate build up, which stresses your fish and makes them ill over time. If you have a small aquarium with lots of fish, change water more often or a larger portion. Use water at the same temperature, treated with a conditioner.

1. Use a gravel cleaner to siphon off some of the dirt on the bottom while draining
2. Change about 30 percent of the water
3. Add fresh water at the same temperature, treated with conditioner
4. Afterwards, briefly check how the fish are behaving

20 to 30 minutes.
