How often should you clean your aquarium filter?
Rinse your aquarium filter once a month in water taken from the aquarium. With a large external filter, every two months can be enough.
If you rinse your filter media under the tap, the chlorine kills the useful filter bacteria and upsets the biological balance. JBL mentions filter cleaning every month or every two months, and Aquania also puts the filter in its monthly maintenance schedule. If the flow drops noticeably, rinse it sooner.
- Switch off the filter and take it apart
- Rinse sponges and mechanical media in water taken from the aquarium, not under the tap
- Check hoses and pump impeller for blockages
- Put the filter back together and restart it
15 to 20 minutes.
