How often should you check your bike lights?

Check your bike lights once a month: front light, rear light and reflectors.

You often only notice a light isn’t working when it’s already dark. Replace or recharge the batteries in time and check that everything is firmly attached.

  1. Test that the front and rear lights work
  2. Replace or recharge batteries if needed
  3. Check that the mounting is firm enough (doesn’t shake loose)
  4. Check that the reflectors are still there and clean

5 to 10 minutes.

In Belgium, the highway code requires a working white or yellow front light and a red rear light (visible at 100 m) plus reflectors, to be used between dusk and sunrise or in poor visibility. The monthly check itself is not a legal obligation; it does help you stay compliant.

These lighting rules apply in Belgium.
