How often should you check your downpipe?
Check your downpipe and its strainer at least twice a year: in spring and in autumn after the leaves fall. Check more often when leaves build up or drainage is blocked.
A blocked downpipe lets water run down your wall instead of draining it away. F&N Lekdetectie recommends cleaning the gutter and drain at least twice a year, in spring and autumn, and fitting a leaf guard on the downpipe. Combine it with cleaning your gutters and work on a stable ladder.
- Check the top of the downpipe for a leaf guard/strainer
- Remove built-up leaves and dirt
- Pour water through to test whether it drains freely
- Check the bottom connection to the sewer
