How often should you prune a grapevine?

Prune a grapevine once a year in early winter, late November or December. After January the vine bleeds sap.

The RHS calls early winter the main pruning time for grapes. Pruning after January makes the vine lose sap, which weakens it. In spring and summer you tie in new shoots and trim them back.

  1. Prune while the vine is dormant, late November or December
  2. Cut this year’s side shoots back to one or two buds
  3. Remove dead and weak wood
  4. Tie the main stems in again
