Growing pioppino

Pioppino or black poplar mushroom (Cyclocybe aegerita) fruits as a ready-to-fruit block at 15.6 to 22.2 °C. Keep the bag closed until the pins are about 5 cm. The first harvest follows after 9 to 14 days.

Pioppino grows in clusters. Young pins dry out quickly; that is why it stays in the closed bag at first.

Setting up

Stand the block upright and pull the corners with the filter forward, so that air can get in. Give 8 to 10 hours of natural or artificial light per day and keep the humidity at 60 % or more.

Opening

Only open the bag when the pins are about 5 cm and then cut it open below the seal. Opening too early lets the young pins dry out.

Harvest and second flush

Harvest when the underside of the caps comes away from the stem. Hold the cluster at the base, twist gently and pull. The second flush follows 12 to 21 days after the first. If the room is below 70 % humidity, fold the bag closed again in between.

Kit or pack

We found no Belgian ready-to-fruit kit; Mushroom Mania sells pioppino as a DIY pack. Dutch practical research gives 22–24 °C and 2 to 3.5 weeks for colonisation.

Growing and eating safely

Allergic lung reactions to inhaled spores have been described in professional growers of, among others, oyster mushroom and shiitake. No risk measure is known for this species or for a single hobby pack. Harvest on time, do not grow in a bedroom, ventilate and always eat the harvest cooked.
