How often should you clean your rain barrel?

Clean your rain barrel and its filter once a year, in spring. If the barrel stands under trees, give it a clean in autumn too.

Sediment and algae reduce how much water you collect and how clean it is, and an open barrel attracts mosquitoes. Manufacturer WISY recommends cleaning a rain barrel at least once or twice a year, preferably in spring and autumn, and doing the filter at the same time. Close the barrel properly again afterwards.

1. Empty the rain barrel or use up the last of the water
2. Remove sediment and sludge from the bottom
3. Check and clean the inlet filter/leaf separator
4. Close the barrel properly again against mosquitoes

20 to 30 minutes.
