How often should you have your lawnmower serviced?

Give your lawnmower a service once a year in spring: sharpen the blade and, for a petrol mower, oil and spark plug.

A blunt blade tears the grass instead of cutting it, and such a lawn is more prone to disease. STIHL recommends sharpening and balancing the blade after 20 to 25 mowing hours; in an average garden that works out at about once a year.

1. Clean grass residue off the mower deck
2. Check and sharpen or replace the blade
3. Change the oil and check/replace the spark plug on a petrol mower
4. Check the condition of cables or battery on an electric model

30 to 60 minutes.
