How often should you trim your hedge?
Trim most hedges once a year, in summer. Fast growers such as privet and Leyland cypress need 2 to 3 trims a year.
A hedge you don’t trim goes bare at the base and grows too wide. Box, beech and hawthorn are trimmed 1 to 2 times a year. Check first whether birds are nesting.
- Check for nesting birds before you start (respect the breeding season)
- Optionally stretch a string as a cutting line for a straight edge
- Trim to a slightly tapered shape (wider at the bottom)
- Clear up the clippings or compost them
