How often should you prune hydrangeas?

Prune mophead and lacecap hydrangeas once a year, in late winter or early spring. Cut the old flower heads back to the first strong pair of buds.

Leave the faded flowers on mophead hydrangeas over winter: they protect the buds from frost. In spring, cut them back and, on an older plant, remove one or two of the oldest stems at the base. This produces young stems that flower better.
