How often should you prune lavender?

Prune lavender every year in late summer, straight after flowering. Cut off the spent flower stalks and about 2.5 cm of leafy growth.

Pruning every year keeps lavender compact and stops the plant from becoming woody at the base and falling apart. Do not cut into old, bare wood, as lavender rarely regrows from it. In spring you can lightly trim the foliage if it looks untidy or frost-damaged.

  1. Wait until flowering has finished
  2. Cut off the spent flower stalks
  3. Trim back about 2.5 cm of leafy growth as well
  4. Stay above the old, bare wood
