How often should you repot houseplants?

Repot most plants every 3 years, ideally in spring. Fast growers or plants with roots coming out of the pot need it sooner.

The RHS says repotting every three to five years suits most plants. Spring is the ideal moment, because the plant starts growing again. In autumn and winter, fresh compost is more likely to stay too wet.

  1. Check whether roots are growing out of the drainage hole
  2. Choose a pot that is only slightly larger
  3. Take the plant out and gently loosen the root ball
  4. Set it in fresh compost and water it
